Coarse Chamotte Clay
This robust chamotte clay is ideal for making large and thick pieces, such as tiles, bricks, and sculptures. Thanks to the coarse chamotte (grain size up to 2 mm), the clay is strong and porous, allowing it to dry and fire evenly. This ensures a stable and reliable result, with minimal risk of deformation or cracking. The firing temperature is between 1832 °F and 2300 °F (1000 °C and 1260 °C).
Clay remains pliable for at least a week after opening. If you store it airtight in our clay bucket, it stays soft and workable for much longer. If the clay dries out, simply add water to make it workable again – up to a minimum firing temperature of 1112 °F (600 °C).
Chamotte gives the clay stability and prevents excessive shrinkage during firing. It also ensures a regular shape and makes the surface more porous, allowing air to escape more easily. Note: the coarse chamotte requires more strength when modeling, making this clay less suitable for very young children.
This coarse chamotte clay is versatile and robust, perfect for ceramists of all levels working on large sculptures and complex pieces. It offers excellent workability and firing performance, making it a reliable choice for creative projects that demand quality and durability.
Available in white and yellow/red.
Tip: clay cannot withstand frost; transport is therefore not possible during freezing conditions.
